The name literally translates as "meat bone tea", and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic) for hours. Despite its name, there is in fact no tea in the dish itself; the name refers to a strong oolong Chinese tea which is usually served alongside the soup in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in this pork-laden dish. Roti canai or roti cane is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found in Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. It is often sold in Mamak stalls in Malaysia; also in Malay, Minangkabau and Aceh restaurants in Indonesia. It is known as roti prata in Southern Malaysia and Singapore, and is similar to the Indian Kerala porotta. It is also found throughout Thailand, where it is called "Ro Tee" and is typically sold by Muslims, most often with street carts, and is usually Halal. Indonesian dictionary describes cendol as a snack made from rice flour and other ingredients that are formed by filters, then mixed with palm sugar and coconut milk (for beverage). There is a popular belief in Indonesia that the name "cendol" is related to, and originated from, the word jendol, in reference to the swollen green worm-like rice flour jelly. Nasi dagang (Jawi: ناسي داڬڠ) is a Malaysian and Southern Thai dish consisting of rice steamed in coconut milk, fish curry and extra ingredients such as fried shaved coconut, hard-boiled eggs and vegetable pickles. Nasi Dagang literally means "Trading Rice". It is a well-known breakfast food in the states on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, such as Terengganu and Kelantan and Southern Thailand territory of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Dim sum is a style of Chinese Canton cuisine prepared as small bite-sized portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum is also well known for the unique way it is served in some restaurants, whereby fully cooked and ready-to-serve dim sum dishes are carted around the restaurant for customers to choose their orders while seated at their tables. Popiah is a Fujian/Chaozhou-style fresh spring roll common in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Popiah is often eaten in the Fujian province of China (usually in Xiamen) and its neighbouring Chaoshan (and by the Teochew and Hokkien diaspora in various regions throughout Southeast Asia) during the Qingming Festival. Nasi lemak is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish; it is also popular in neighbouring countries such as Singapore; Indonesia (especially in Eastern Sumatra), Brunei, and Southern Thailand. Nasi Lemak also can be found in the Southern Philippines prepared by Filipino Muslims. It is considered one of the most famous dishes for a Malay-style breakfast.

Cooking Classes Southeast Asia. We have now arrived at the Thai Farm Cooking School. We had a choice between doing the cooking course in the city or going out to the countryside and I think we've made the right decision. I'm making a yellow curry today. This is mine. This is what I created and Sam went for the green curry, so this is his. We're making the Tom Yum soup. Mine is going to have shrimp and I've got my coconut milk here, so I'm going to be adding some ingredients - mushrooms, onions. So overall that was a really cool experience learning how to cook Thai food. I made five different dishes. I'm beyond full. Like I feel like I'm ready to hibernate now. So this was 1100 Baht. It was like lunch and dinner and the thing I really liked about this particular school was that it was out in the countryside where we were able to get outside of the city and away from the pollution and whatnot and just have a really cool organic cooking experience. This morning we've got a special activity planned. We are taking a cooking class - a Khmer cooking class. I'm all thumbs in the kitchen but I'm going to give it my best shot. Right now we're at the local market and we are going to pickup some ingredients for the cooking class and it is raining. I'm trying to slice lemongrass. We're really earning our meal here. We're making our curry paste. We've been pounding away for almost ten minutes now. Here is the meal we prepared today. We have spring rolls with a nice dipping sauce, lok lak (a kind of beef meat) and over here Amok, which is fish in a coconut cream sauce. We just finished our cooking class. I didn't cause an International Incident. I didn't burn down the kitchen, so overall it was a success. If anyone wants to come the Kitchen is called Nary's Kitchen and they have a morning and an evening class. It costs ten dollars a person. This restaurant and cooking school is run by Nary and her husband Toot. They will take you to the market and you will spend an hour there just looking at different vegetables, picking up ingredients and then afterwards you come back to the school you cook for two hours and then you get to enjoy your meal. We highly recommend it. Excellent food. We don't put much sugar in Lao cooking like Thai food. You taste Thai food and it tastes milky and creamy and sweet because they add lots of coconut milk and lots of sugar. That is why the food tastes like that. Lao food is very different tasting like lots of herbs and lots of texture. We're making the Mok Pa fish and you are going to show us how to wrap it. Here we have our buffalo salad. We stir-fried some buffalo meat and we also added bean sprouts, banana flowers, string beans, hot chilies and mint leaves. Today we are having lunch at the Green Moss in Hoi An, Vietnam. Here are the first few dishes we've prepared. We have the Pho and the fresh spring rolls. Let's go eat it. Take them to the table and devour them. Next up we will be making a vegetable Cao Lau. So the Cao Lau noodles are made from the water used an ancient well and apparently it is quite secret. Not only in Hoi An. Unique noodles to Hoi An. It is harder. It's a crispy noodle. Now we're making our very last dish the vegetable pancake and it happens to be my favorite one. How is the Cao Lau? I love it. What really stands out with the Cao lau is the taste of the noodles. They are just really unique to this area and I love them. So the texture of the noodles are a little bit crispy and it almost tastes a little bit like they are under-cooked but that is what makes them quite unique. We just finished our cooking class at Green Moss and it was a little bit different from previous cooking classes we've taken. This one was a little bit less hands on and more watch and learn, which is great because we got to watch a professional make it and the dishes turned out great. Everything was tasty. The standouts in my opinion are Korean street food, Chinese street food, Thai street food, Malaysian street food, Vietnamese street food and Taiwanese street food. The following is a travel and food guide to the best street food to be found in Asia: 1) Thai Street Food Where can you find Thai street. In a word - everywhere! Street food in Thailand is as much a part of daily life as songthaews and Buddhist monks. In this video we showcase the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand where we sample numerous street food delights including twist potatoes, blueberry cheesecake ice cream, pan-fried dumplings, sausage and banana pancakes with chocolate. 2) Korean Street Food I've said it before but it is worth repeating again: "There is no place on earth that offers better street food that South Korea." Called 'pojangmacha' some of my favorites include tteokbokki and hotteok. If you're in Seoul consider checking out Insadong and Namdaemun for a diverse selection of delectable delights. 3) Macanese Street Food Friends had told us about the legendary street food in Macua. Fortunately for us we had an opportunity to try it ourselves. Some of the top highlights included egg tarts, pork chop bun, almond cakes, soy milk and Taiwanese pearl milk bubble tea. 4) Chinese Street Food Our favorite city to eat street, while traveling in China, was the night market in Yangshuo. We started off with satay, a smoky and spicy meat and then moved on to Chinese banana pancakes. Compared to other countries where I've tried banana pancakes. 5) Malaysian Street Food I've visited many night markets in Asia and the Jonker Street Night Market, located in Malacca, Malaysia, is one of my all time favorites. On a hot and humid evening we had a chance to cool down with some delicious Cendol. 6) Singapore Street Food Singapore is by far the most expensive country in Southeast Asia to visit. Accommodation is expensive. Eating at restaurants costs a small fortune. The solution? Hawker Centres. These open air food stall complexes serve up wonderful delights from cuisine all over Asia and especially SE Asia. We were lucky enough to sample Hainanese chicken rice, butter chicken, butter naan, satay and dim sum. 7) Khmer Street Food Have you ever tried insects before? Prior to traveling in SE Asia I had yet to experience eating an insect. While in Cambodia I had the chance to devour some deep-fried crickets. 8) More Malaysian Cuisine While wandering around in Melaka we cooled down with Cendol - this time with ice cream while munching on deep-fried banana. 9) More Thailand Cuisine Here we show you the infamous Thai banana pancake, also known as banana roti, as made from scratch Thai style. While living nearby Chiang Mai Gate we came here often to this stall for a sweet treat and for some dessert. Coming in at only 30 Baht (1 USD) it's the kind of treat where you can have more than one. 10) Thai Cuisine once again One of our favorite outdoor stalls in Chiang Mai served yellow noodles with dumplings. The wanton like dumplings were a real treat. Coming in at just over a dollar we ate here often to save money. This is our street food guide to Asia. Did you enjoy it? What are some of our favorite street foods from Asia or around the world? This is part of our Travel in Asia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Asian culture, Asian arts, Asian foods, Asian religion and Asian people. Banana Leaf Southeast Asian Cuisine Power Plant Mall Rockwell. Banana Leaf is the multi-awarded Southeast Asian restaurant that first introduced Filipino diners to the delights of modern Malaysian, Singaporean, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, and Indonesian cuisine when it opened its first branch in Greenbelt 1 on August 8, 2001. Originally a franchise from Hong Kong they now have multiple branches across the Philippines. Their dishes use authentic ingredients sourced from the appropriate home countries, and developed by international master chefs. When it comes to authentic contemporary Southeast Asian cuisine, no one serves it up better than Banana Leaf. One of our favorite restaurants for their Roti Canai which is a huge Indian flat break that is flaky and crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside and best dipped into a curry sauce. Other dishes that we recommend are Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls, Chicken Sate, Pandan Chicken, Prawn Toasts, Nasi Lemak, Nasi Goreng, Sauteed Clams in Singaporean Chili, Malayan Prawn Coconut Curry, Black Pepper Prawns and above all their Singaporean Black Pepper Crab which they used to serve.
